Better in Time

Time and all Eternity.
I was thinking about this yesterday. We spent 10 hours on the road to be in Nauvoo for 4 hours. That gave me plenty of time to think.Watching the Lumens be sealed just reminded me...all things are better in Time.

It's a Zoo out there

Went to the temple with the whole fam yesterday. That is the life.

We've never taken our kids to the Omaha Zoo before. I know. Lame-o parents. Hey, we just did Disney for the first time ever this year. What do you expect? So after we finished at the temple we checked out the zoo.

It is a GREAT Zoo.

Most of the time the animals were right up next to where we were as if they wanted to be photographed. So, I obliged. Although one gorilla was ticked off at us, I assume, and charged the window to get to us and crashed into it. It was pretty scary. I thought I'd put these photos in my blog as proof that I was there.

We spent a little over 3 hours there and saw just over half of the park. We'll definately go back. For now, we'll have to settle for our own zoo...at home.

Savor the Moment

New carpet was laid.

Smells good.

No furniture moved back.

Cleaned the walls.

Vaccuumed 2 times.

It'll never be that way again.
Think I'll just savor the moment....

Dining Tips

I found this list of dining tips online this morning. It comes from waiters and waitresses....I think it's pretty good.

1. Avoid eating out on holidays and Saturday nights. The sheer volume of customers guarantees that most kitchens will be pushed beyond their ability to produce a high-quality dish.

2. There are almost never any sick days in the restaurant business. A busboy with a kid to support isn't going to stay home and miss out on $100 because he's got strep throat. And these are the people handling your food.

3. When customers' dissatisfaction devolves into personal attacks, adulterating food or drink is a convenient way for servers to exact covert vengeance. Some waiters can and do spit in people's food.

4. Never say "I'm friends with the owner." Restaurant owners don't have friends. This marks you as a clueless poseur the moment you walk in the door.

5. Treat others as you want to be treated. (Yes, people need to be reminded of this.

6. Don't snap your fingers to get our attention. Remember, we have shears that cut through bone in the kitchen.

7. Don't order meals that aren't on the menu. You're forcing the chef to cook something he doesn't make on a regular basis. If he makes the same entrée 10,000 times a month, the odds are good that the dish will be a home run every time.

8. Splitting entrées is okay, but don't ask for water, lemon, and sugar so you can make your own lemonade. What's next, grapes so you can press your own wine?

9. If you find a waiter you like, always ask to be seated in his or her section. Tell all your friends so they'll start asking for that server as well. You've just made that waiter look indispensable to the owner. The server will be grateful and take good care of you.

10. If you can't afford to leave a tip, you can't afford to eat in the restaurant. Servers could be giving 20 to 40 percent to the busboys, bartenders, maître d', or hostess.

11. Always examine the check. Sometimes large parties are unaware that a gratuity has been added to the bill, so they tip on top of it. Waiters "facilitate" this error. It's dishonest, it's wrong-and I did it all the time.

12. If you want to hang out, that's fine. But increase the tip to make up for money the server would have made if he or she had had another seating at that table.

13. Never, ever come in 15 minutes before closing time. The cooks are tired and will cook your dinner right away. So while you're chitchatting over salads, your entrées will be languishing under the heat lamp while the dishwasher is spraying industrial-strength, carcinogenic cleaning solvents in their immediate vicinity.

Not so Guilty Pleasures

While I'm still waiting for my summer to kick in...I have had some pretty good moments that are impossible to feel guilty about.

This is guilt-free melt in your mouth goodness...and I'm not talking about the hot dogs at Fritz's.
Then there's always the little bit of guilt associated with eating a pound of fudge...
But then, there's redemption...burning off calories at the swim meets....Does standing around sweating like a roasted pig on spit watching my girls count?
I think Bridger and Baylee may have used up more energy being nervous...
Then there was this bread....I don't know if you can call it guilt-free and for sure I can't because I can't stop at one piece.
Zucchini-Pineapple Bread
Ingredients:
3 eggs, beaten
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup vegetable oil
2 cups grated zucchini
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1/2 cup macadamia nuts
1 cup crushed pineapple, drained

Directions:In a large bowl mix together the eggs, sugar, vanilla, oil and zucchini. In a separate bowl mix together the flour, soda, baking powder, and salt. Add to the zucchini batter and mix well. Stir in raisins, nuts, and pineapple until just blended. Pour into 2-9x5x3 inch loaf pans.Bake in a preheated 325 degree F (165 degrees C) for one hour, or until browned.
This bread is so decadent and a little indulgent...like dessert. You feel so good about eating it because of the zucchini and wheat flour but the fruit and nuts make it fancy shmancy. If you bake your bread in stone pans, be sure to add almost 20 minutes to the baking time.
Then last night we had the ultimate guilt-free pleasure of seeing the MOTAB choir in the Sprint Center.
Incredible. I feel lighter then I ever have losing 5 lbs. Not even the anti-Jewish demonstration could bring me down. I had to scratch my head over that one....did they confuse Mormon with Jewish or is it because the choir sang a Jewish wedding song last night? Really?

And as I blog...the carpet layers are in the basement. What started May 15 will soon be over, although it's funny how one big project spawns another.

I'm on board with more guilt-free pleasures.

Therapy Thank you

"There isn’t much better in this life than finding a way to spend a few hours in conversation with people you respect and love. You have to carve this time out of your life because you aren’t really living without it."

Real Live Preacher

I wish I had pictures to post of my friend Janene's visit. We spent more time conversating then photographing....which is a good thing.

Timing is everything. I feel like I've received some well-timed advice this week as well. This well-timed advice is welcome.

Thank you all for putting up with the hours of my anxiety. ;) Peace does come.

He's Not...

This is a list of all the things our Dad is not...in honor of Father's Day.

Our Dad is not a Fun Sucker.

Our Dad is not a whiner.

Our Dad is not boring. Our Dad is not Randy Jackson.

Our Dad is not a fan of the ocean. Our Dad is not bad at Rock Band.
Our Dad is not fond of missing a day without ice cream.

Our Dad is not good at saying NO. He's not the earliest riser. He's not the type to not help someone move. He's not a father of boys and yet attends every scout camp. He's not about to give up his obsession with watches and hats. He's not disloyal. He's not unfriendly.

Our Dad is not only our Dad...but he's the BEST DAD! Happy Father's Day...

Soap du jour

Excuse me ma'am, what is the soup du jour?

It's the soup of the day.

Ummmm, I'll have that.

Okay, so I'm about as smart as Floyd and Harry...but instead of soup...we're talking soap.

That's right. Soap. What is crazier then trying to take on a new hobby? I don't know. But someone talked me into it. :)

It shouldn't be that hard right? Just melt the soap base...add fragrance...pour in a mold and cool. Yeah. Not so easy. We're still in the experimental phase but so far we've got some good smelling soap.

We've been researching and found some techniques to try out. One of the things that this new adventure led to was the discovery that we could make our own "scentsy" scents. You know those wax cubes you melt in the little pots to make your house smell good? Well, they are pretty pricey and hard to find. We made up our own batch of them by melting wax and adding fragrance and pouring into the boxes the original scentsy cubes come in. I put a cube in my burner on thursday and I'm still using the same one. It actually lasts longer and I figure it costs about 65 cents a box to make rather than $2.99 a box to buy. It takes almost no time and isn't too hard to do.
So when Kiera and I give up on the soap making business, I wonder what will be the next hobby du jour.

Feelin' the Blues

The strange thing about it is...I've never been a big fan of blues. Next to red...it's the lowest color on my favorite color totem. So what is it about aqua? It's not really blue. It's soothing. It's cool. It's clean. It means Tiffany's. Yes, that's right...Tiffany's. For years I wanted Tiffany Jewelry. I was almost obsessed. In 2003 I bought myself my first piece of Tiffany Jewelry. To be honest, I don't know if I was more excited about the necklace or the blue box. I loved the way the blue offset the white bow. It was magic. And of course I've saved the box...and the other Tiffany boxes I've gotten since.

When it came time to plan Chloe's 16th birthday, 2 years ago, I wanted to incorporate the aqua color into her theme so I decided to go with C & Co., like Tiffany and Company...for Chloe and Company. We used a lot of aqua, white and chocolate brown. Ever since then, I can't seem to get the color from my mind. I have used it in several rooms and places in my home. Over the last couple of years the color has evolved but I always come back to aqua.

My first blue project was 2 years ago in Bridger's room...she has a beach theme in there...Then I painted my laundry room a blue-grey color. A little out there for me. But then I realized that 2 years ago I bought a blue washer and dryer, so it worked out. And then I loved aqua so much that I painted the bathroom between Chloe and Hunter's bedroom.
And my latest blue escapade...my flooded office....
And my favorite of all....aqua houndstooth fabric!!! Can you stand it??!! The perfect fabric for a project for my office.

I think my passion for this shade of color might take over my house. There's one shade of blue that you won't find anywhere but here....

unless you count our blood. Cuz, have I mentioned this before?....we bleed Blue!! Do you think BYU would let me do a aqua make-over?

I'm feelin' these blues...

Promises are sure

In spite of continuing downpours, the new sump pump is keeping the basement dry. I'm pretty sure that my yard doesn't need any more water for awhile. As it was pouring I began to worry that my basement and yard would flood away. Actually, I was getting a bit discouraged, frankly. I have to remind myself that the Lord won't flood the earth again. I guess He never promised that my basement wouldn't though. One thing is for sure. The flowers are gorgeous right now. The lower temps have been good to my neglected hibiscus.
My favorite promise right now is....I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

Belated Birthday

Happy Birthday Bridger!

She's finally....officially a teenager...although she's been acting like one for awhile now. She's a good girl. My easy going, go with the flow girl. We celebrated in grand style...church, Chicken Maria's Way and Maggie Moo's Better Batter icecream cake with Udderly Cream icecream on the side....shared with the RitterB's. Birthdays have been scaled way back this year. Is it me or does it seem like birthdays have gotten completely out of control?
This will be Bridger's last year as a middle schooler. So far so good. I've decided my girls are late bloomers. Middle school is typically rough on girls but for us it's been freshman and sophomore years that we struggle with. I hope this won't happen for Bridger at all. I hope she will have the confidence she needs to stand for her convictions and be a leader rather than a follower.

Bridger leaves for Girl's Camp tomorrow...and no, I'm not going. Big shocker...two of my girls in camp and my husband going and I'm not going. I suppose I'm shirking my churchly duties. Actually, I wasn't asked to go this year. I'm feeling totally okay with that and frankly...relieved. Hunter and Boyd left for camp today. It is like a crazy bomb goes off the morning we load up for girls camp.

Last year I posted about Bridger's birth here. I still marvel at the gift she has been to me. She used to tell that she never wanted to grow up and move away from me, and that she would live with me forever. I made her promise me that she wouldn't change her mind. Recently, I've had to let her break her promise as I know she is entering the years of not really liking me so much. It was bound to happen eventually. Sigh.

Happy Birthday to my baby.
