The last 5 days

In the last 5 days, I have...

Used a porta-potty to change clothes.

Cleared lava rocks from a patch of dirt to create a place to try and sleep.

Hiked 18 miles, pushing and pulling a handcart...up steep terrain.

Aged 10 years from the weathering of living outdoors 24 hours a day with no shower or protection from wind and sun.

Met and loved teenagers like they were my own.

Felt contentment while seeing families gathered around their campfires.

Woke to sunrises over mountain peaks and attempted to sleep under lavender skies of sunset and black, cloudless nights of endless stars.

Found dirt in every nook and cranny.

Eaten very well...7 meals from a dutch oven.

Driven to Las Vegas and back to drop of Chloe and Hunter at the airport for the first leg of their journey to Italy.

And felt pretty darn grateful for it all too.

I have to admit, I am SO grateful the trek wasn't really around when I was that age. I think I would have had a heart attack!

What an awesome 5 days, never to be forgotten. You are definitely made of the right stuff to do it, and I'm proud of you, and happy for you. Hope all will be well now with Chloe and Hunter-(I worry too much!) This will be a never-forgotten adventure for them also. Love you!!!

PS. And I hope they girls have a wonderful time in Italy! (How can they miss?!)

Nothing puts life in perspective faster than a trek. Whenever I buy a new gadget I think "is this worth hauling across the plains in a handcart"? And then I usually buy it anyway.
